The Worm Lady Hornworm Facts

(Horn Worm life cycle'Manduca sexta' complete Life Cycle

If you are a vegetable gardener you're probably all too familiar with the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) and/or tomato hornworm (quinquemaculata).  These are the large green caterpillars, which can reach 4" in length and attain a body diameter of 1/2" or more!

They are extremely well hidden among your tomato plants and once you find one you'll wonder how in heaven's name you could have missed it!  Place it back where you found it and - poof! it disappears!  Even their reddish, or black horn, seems to blend right in!  These intimidating caterpillars are actually totally harmless, but they are the bane of many gardeners and crop farmers.

They actually are NOT worms but the larval stage (caterpillar) of two closely related species of Sphinx moths.

Hornworms are great feeder insects for your chameleon, bearded dragon, or any non-vegetarian herps, reptiles or exotics.

These hornworns do not only feed on tomato and tobacco plants, but all plants in the Solanaceae family which also include: potato, peppers, eggplant, deadly nightshade, petunia, nicotiana, Datura (aka thorn apple or jimson weed).

Important note

The foliage and stems of all of these plants are TOXIC TO SECONDARY FEEDERS - YOUR CHAMELEON, BEARDED DRAGON, and most herps, reptiles and exotics!  Always buy your tobacco hornworm live feeders for your reptiles only from reputable breeders/suppliers that grow tobacco hornworms in a controlled environment, free of dangerous pesticides and away from any plants, and fed only with the Special Hornworm Yellow Chow to insure their hornworms are healthy and safe for your pets.

The Manduca species (spp.) have developed both mechanical and physiological ways to protect themselves from the toxins, much like monarch butterfly larva and its toxic host plant, milkweed.  You may have seen some of their cousins flitting around your garden on warm summer days such as the “hummingbird” moth Hemaris thysbe or the white-lined sphinx, Hyles lineata.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

DO NOT COLLECT HORNWORMS FROM YOUR GARDEN AND FEED THEM TO ANY ANIMAL

There is a readily available artificial diet for hornworms (Yellow Hornworm Chow) which must be used for feeding to avoid poisoning your reptiles.

The Yellow Hornworm Chow is specifically formulated for ideal nutritional values and hydration of the hornworms to produce great live feeders for your pets.

Hornworm Life Cycle

Manduca sexta (man-doo-ka) comes from the Latin: Manduca = glutton (no clarification needed!), and sexta = six-fold, which refers to the six abdominal stripes on the adult moth (hornworm moth).

The Manduca sexta (horned worm) life cycle takes from 39 days (minimum) up to 48 days, depending on the time of the year and the ambient temperatures, from when the moth lays her eggs and the larvae transitions through the entire cycle to the Adult moth.
