ReptiWorms, Calciworms®, and Phoenix Worms®are three different brand names  for the ‘black soldier fly larvae’ Hermetia illucens.

The larva of the black soldier fly is recognized by many authorities to be one of the very best live feeders available for herps, birds and aquatics.

Best Live Feeder - Phoenix Worms®

Black soldier flyHermetia illucensis a common and widespread fly of the family Stratiomyidae. The larvae and adults are considered neither pests nor vectors.  Instead, black soldier fly larvae play a similar role to that of redworms (Red Wigglers) as essential decomposers in breaking down organic substrates and returning nutrients to the soil.  The larvae have voracious appetites and can be used for composting household food scraps and agricultural waste products (in warm climates of 80F -100 F).

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are an excellent source of sustainable protein for aqua culture, animal feed, pet and human nutrition. They are truly a Maintenance-Free grub and can last 4-5 weeks in the larva stage when kept dormant at 50-55 F

Welcome to The Worm Lady's  Phoenix Worm  page... where you'l find  GENUINE Phoenix Worms®  are our business ... You've come to the source.  This is where you can order the real Phoenix Worms  by Dr. Craig Sheppard, University of Georgia entomologist and the developer of this unique new feeder insect.

Our Fresh Phoenix Worms come direct to us from the producer Insect Science Resource LLC, Tifton, Georgia(we've secured our Import Permit from Agriculture Canada to import them directly from the source, to our facility here in McGregor, Ontario) and when you order your Phoenix Worms from The Worm Lady they are then sent direct to you from our facility* by FedEx-Overnight, or Canada Post Priority Mail.  NO middle-man ... which means you are sure to get the freshest Phoenix Worms - and not some old stock that is sitting in a warehouse for 3-4 weeks before you order them!

Most aquatics and lizards, including bearded dragons, skinks, chameleons, anoles, geckos, turtles, frogs, tarantulas, scorpions and fish can really benefit from these live worms.

Differentiating feature of Phoenix Worms  versus  ordinary Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL).

Phoenix Worms® are reared on a specially enriched grain-based diet that ensures a 'naturally' high calcium content.

They are packaged in a sealed container for convenience and long shelf life.  No feeding or cleaning is ever required ... simply keep them sealed in the original container at room temperature and they will stay vigorous for weeks in the non-food packing media.

Nutritional values of black soldier fly larvae have been studied extensively for exotic pets/reptiles, herps, hens, fish, and other species for many years and are truly quite unique and amazing.  Significant reductions of  E.coli 0157:H7 and Salmonella Enterica have been identified in animals fed on BSFL.  Lauric Acid makes up over half of the BSFL’s fat content.  This ‘good’ fat with strong antimicrobial properties helps prevent and/or fight bacterial and other infections such as Clostridium and Coccidia – two very common and sometimes deadly health issues with reptiles/herps.

In addition, these Phoenix Worms (due to the enriched-grain-diet) attain a Calcium:Phosphorus ratio of approximately 1.54:1 – which is virtually ideal for most amphibians and reptiles.  Poor calcium:phosphorus ratio results in Calcium deficiencies and MBD, and is the main reason for calcium supplementation (dusting) of all other insects, but ‘Calcium dusting’ is not required when feeding 'Genuine' Phoenix Worms® !  The calcium content of the Phoenix Worms is up to 8,155ppm as opposed to between 20 and 135ppm in mealworms and crickets.  Black Soldier Fly Larvae protein and fat levels are 17.3% and 9.4% respectively.

When fed to gravid females, Phoenix Worms® increase clutch size, and health of hatchlings, and aids in the female’s recovery.  Additionally, when fed to juveniles, this wonderful staple food can boost growth by up to 30%!  They are soft bodied so there is no fear of impaction.

Phoenix Worms® can be kept at room temperature for extended periods or even longer in cooler conditions (50 to 65F).  They do not make any noise and do not need to be fed or cleaned, ever ... they are totally maintenance-free, which our customers all love!

Phoenix Worms® are normally sold in '100 count' cups, but here at The Worm Lady, we recognize that many of our clients would prefer a smaller amount.  That’s why we are happy to provide ½ size '50 count' containers to our clients.

Supplementing your pet’s regular diet with Phoenix Worms® every other day is a healthy, smart, and inexpensive option for everyone.

"My baby bearded dragon had never been offered any Phoenix Worms.  I had heard so many good things about them that I decided to buy one tub for him to try out ... WOW!

On my first attempt he gulped down 9 Phoenix Worms in no time at all ... he just loves Phoenix Worms!

I'll be using these, as a staple feeder from now on, with more of The Worm Lady's really fresh and healthy other live worms too!"

Thanks Annie for recommending these.

The larvae of Hermetia illucens, commonly known as the Black Soldier Fly, Phoenix Worms (reared on an enriched grain-based diet) have been fed to many thousands of animals by breeders and hobbyists over the past twelve years.  Insect Science Resource LLC (Located in Tifton, Georgia, USA) regularly supplies Phoenix Worms to the San Diego Zoo, Indianapolis Zoo, Saint Louis Zoo, San Diego Safari Park, the National Aquarium and many other zoos.

Recommended by veterinarians, genuine Phoenix Worms are the only calcium-rich feeder that has naturally balanced calcium and phosphorus and can be safely fed as a staple (regular every day diet).  Delicious, nutritious, high in calcium and low in fat.

Hermetia illucens, or the Black Soldier Fly Larvae, are marketed under several brand names such as Phoenix Worms, and Calci-Worms. The history with this insect species goes to its root in the reptile hobby. Some ten years ago, Allen Repashy was actually responsible for the introduction of the original “Phoenix Worm” into the Reptile trade as a live food item through his collaborative efforts with Dr. Craig Sheppard, Department of Entomology, University of Georgia. These larvae have proven to initiate a great feeding response and have a very high nutritional value when compared to most other insects. They are quite high in Calcium, and test results have shown that the 'Genuine Phoenix Worms' are approximately 8150 (ppm) Calcium and 5350 (ppm) Phosphorous. A perfect balance for omnivorous and insectivorous vertebrates!

WARNING!

Only genuine Phoenix Worms® provide the excellent nutrition and balanced Ca:P ratio you can depend on. Our special grain-based diet is unique. Copycat worms fed a different diet do not provide identical nutritional values. Demand an independent lab analysis and see for yourself. Important: Genuine Phoenix Worms are packed in a medium that is proven safe for your animals. Imitation worms are packed in wood shavings or other substances which may harm your animals when ingested. Please use extreme caution for the health and safety of your animals.
Phoenix Worms - Simply Irresistible ... and way more than a treat!

Naturally high Calcium reverses MBD

Lauric acid combats coccidia & other pathogens

Balanced Ca:P makes them a great staple

 "Hello Annie,

Thank you so, so much for your quality live feeders!

I will never purchase my Beardie's food anywhere else!  Ever since I switched his staple food to your phoenix worms he has been happier, his colours are brighter, and his digestion is a million times better!  we can even enjoy bath time now as its meant for - relaxing - and not stressfull digestion. I don't want to know what was in the pet store feeders after seeing the difference in his health from your feeders.

Thanks a million, Adrienne"

I've just recently ordered through "The Worm Lady" and have nothing but wonderful things to say about the experience.  I'd absolutely recommend her.

Phoenix Worms are also a natural weapon against coccidia.  In addition to having a perfect balance of calcium and phosphorus, Phoenix Worms provide high levels of natural lauric acid.  Lauric acid is known for its excellent antimicrobial properties including potent activity against lipid coated viruses, clostridium and pathogenic protozoa including coccidia.  Lauric acid is a medium chain saturated fatty acid found in Phoenix Worms as well as some vegetable oils and in dairy products.  53% of the fat in Phoenix Worms is beneficial lauric acid, a proven antimicrobial especially effective against coccidiosis.

Testimonial accounts of improved health when Phoenix Worms are fed - There are instances of cured metabolic bone disease (MBD) where animals have regained the ability to walk and eat on their own.  A breeder of shama birds has reported that a broken beak completely regrew in less than three weeks, something never seen before.  A dart frog breeder now has tadpoles from two species that she had never been able to breed before. She credits Phoenix Worms with this success.

The Worm Lady is Agriculture Canada approved to import 'genuine original' Phoenix Worms directly from the producer, Insect Science Resource LLC, in Georgia. This is your assurance that you'll get the freshest Phoenix Worms, delivered direct to your doorstep, when you buy your Phoenix Worms online from The Worm Lady, and at the best price too!

Annie Brenner...
I just ordered 3 more cups of Phoenix Worms through her.  You get your order in 2 business days!  There's no minimum order, she carries every bug: hornworms, silkworms, superworms, butterworms, waxworms, mealworms, including phoenix worms and her prices are amazing!  I average spending 8cents per bug in the stores. I've now gone down 2cents making them about 6cents per bug having them shipped right to my door! :D  I now save time and gas too!

-She's a lovely lady who owns a BD and really loves them.  I will always order through her.  She does not have a web site yet but here is her e-mail
 thewormlady1@gmail.com
-Just let her know what bug you want and how many and she'll send you a price.  Highly recommend! :D  And feel free to say Holly on BD.org recommended her and says hi.

Just received my first worm order from the Worm Lady ...

 Everything is good :)

Silks are fine, Phoenix worms are perfect.  Quite good since other people I have bought phoenix worms from seem to always sell me phoenix worms that the majority of them are black, which means they are pupating (into the soldier fly). They can still be fed ... they just don't move, so the enticing part for your pet is gone.  Your's are definitely much better.   Thanks Worm Lady.  Trevor!

The Worm Lady®

Phoenix Worms® Phoenix Worms come from Dr. Craig Sheppard, University of Georgia entomologist and the developer of this unique new feeder insect. The larvae of Hermetia illucens, commonly known as the Black Soldier Fly, Phoenix Worms have been fed to many thousands of animals by breeders and hobbyists over the past twelve years.  See: BSFL

Incredible Calcium/Phosphorus Ratio!

Recommended by veterinarians, genuine Phoenix Worms are the only calcium-rich feeder that has naturally balanced calcium and phosphorus and can be safely fed as a staple. ( See: What Can Bearded Dragons Eat )  Phoenix Worms are: Delicious, nutritious, high in calcium and low in fat.

Phoenix worms pack an almost perfect ratio of calcium and phosphorus which can halt (and sometimes even reverse) metabolic bone disease.  It increases clutch sizes, and when fed to babies/juveniles, boosts growth rates by up to 30%.  They also have high natural levels of lauric acid, known to be an excellent antimicrobial which is very potent and guards against lipid-coated viruses, clostridium and pathogenic protozoa including coccidian.

These black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) wriggle like mad and trigger a tremendous feeding response!  They don’t smell, don’t need to be fed, won’t escape from the feed dish, can be kept cool (50F/12C degrees or above) or at room temperature, and the only ‘care’ they may need is a couple of drops of water if their substrate begins to get dry.

Care Sheet For Phoenix Worms® -

Keep your Phoenix Worms in their original closed container to preserve the correct moisture balance. Phoenix Worms will keep for weeks at room temperature from 60-70 degrees. For even longer shelf life, keep coll (50-60 degrees) but do not refrigerate.

Larger sized Phoenix Worms are farther along in their life cycle and will darken in preparation for pupation more quickly than the smaller sized ones. This is normal and the worms are not dead, Calcium levels are at their highest in the darker worms. We suggest feeding the darker worms first while they are still wiggling.

Packing media can easily be removed from your worms by pouring out the worms to be served and allowing them to dry for a few minutes. Media will fall away from the dry worms. Any clinging residue can be easily blown off before serving.

Serve the dry Phoenix Worms in a shallow dish. Any remaining moisture can enable the Phoenix Worms to climb out of the dish and hide in the substrate.

Leopard Gecko eating a fat hornworm - from The Worm Lady

My rescued Leopard Gecko eating one of his favorite live feeders ... a horned worm from The Worm Lady.

Photo from Emily Loop

"This picture is of my 13th rescued leopard gecko!  He was giving me a hard time!  See his feet are orange!  He was kept on calci-sand that sadly was bedded for 3 sheds!  He wouldn't eat for nothing!  Annie suggested Horn Worms and well ... this is the result!  Sadly the store I was buying worms off, who actually got their worm supply from Annie, was closing down and they gave me a card to get a hold of her. That was the best phone call I ever made!

I run a Reptile Rescue here in Leamington out of my home,  I own 15 of my own leopard geckos, 2 bearded dragons, 1 crested gecko, and at anytime there is 5-10 rescues In my home!  You can imagine how hungry they must be!  Annie's worms are the best I have ever got!  Pet stores can't compare!  She hand picks and counts every worm to make sure it's quality and quantity!  At any given time there are about 6000 insects in my home to properly feed my rescues!

And at 'The Worm Lady' the prices don't break the bank!  I have not once had a cricket die unless it's being chewed on by a beardie or leo!  Worms, all types, horns, silks, all are always amazing!  High quality!  Not only are her insects top quality but she is also amazing in educating you on what each and every single worm she has does and what it will do for your reptile!

If you're not buying from Annie I suggest you start to order!  You won't regret it.  :)"
