Brown Banded Crickets  vs  other species ...

Most reptile pet owners would agree that the live feeder insect industry has faced significant challenges over the past couple of years. Since the 'cricket densivorous' virus first infected North-America, after wreaking havoc across Europe, many of the largest cricket farms in the US were wiped out and forced to go out of business.  Because Acheta domesticus crickets (the house cricket) were the species affected by the virus another more resilient species Gryllus assimilis (the Jamaican Field Cricket) became the feeder cricket of choice.

Here at The Worm Lady, we were blessed by having a top Canadian cricket producer supplying all of our high quality, disease-free crickets.  After we adopted our 'Organic Feeding' policy  for all our crickets, meals, and supers last year, all of our customers began giving us a thumbs-up with an overwhelmingly positive response as to the liveliness and increased life span of our gut-loaded crickets.

We are still going to carry and supply you with our healthy House Crickets -- but now will also be offering you the option of the Brown Banded Cricket (tropical house cricket) at the same competitive pricing!  The banded, native to Southern Europe,  has become the favorite cricket of Europe and UK.  Banded crickets have proven themselves to be far more nutritious than their rival Black Cricket and Silent Cricket in recent laboratory test results:  The banded crickets were found to have a higher caloric value and higher protein levels than both their rivals.

Brown or 'banded' crickets represent what we feel to be a genuinely better live cricket food option for our cricket buyers...maybe we should be calling them 'super crickets'!

The tests came out as follows:

Tests were performed by Foodtest Laboratories on behalf of Livefoods Direct on April 26th 2010.

NEW !!! Banded Crickets Now Available in 4 Sizes

from  1/4"  -  3/8" -  1/2"' -  and 3/4" (adult size)

The Banded Cricket Has A Number Of Strengths:

  1. Hearty - not prone to the AdDNV cricket virus that has threatened our industry in the past
  2. Longevity - Banded Crickets have a great shelf-life
  3. Less Odor - with less odor than the acheta cricket (house cricket)
  4. Very Active - provides a lively feeding experience for your pets
  5. Non-Aggressive - does not show the aggressive tendencies of the Jamaican or African crickets, to pets, or humans
  6. Very Digestible - nice meaty body, thinner shell, short wings, soft exoskeleton (less chitin)
  7. Minimal Noise - only adults chirp (short wings make less noise)

Note:  Banded Crickets do not handle the cold well so they cannot be shipped in below 45 degree F (7 C) temperatures.  Also note that these crickets are super-high jumpers so your vivarium should be high walled and/or have a top screen or lid they will not be able to escape from.  These are great climbers which makes them ideal for arboreal pets.  They also tend to be faster than most cricket species making them ideal live feeders for animals that enjoy the chase.

The Jamaican Field cricket (Gryllus assimilis) became approved by the FDA as a feeder cricket and was popular among cricket growers during the virus outbreak.  It grows larger than most feeder crickets and withstands wide variations in temperatures during shipping better than some of the other crickets.  Depending on what it is fed, it is nutritionally equivalent to the Acheta domestica (house cricket) with a slight edge on protein content.  The Jamaican Field Cricket has been reported to be more aggressive, and if large enough (adult full sized) can put a bite in human hands.  This can be due simply to hunger issues, so if used to feed your pets, make sure they are properly fed and satisfied before introducing them.  The Jamaican does not seem to be as well liked as a feeder cricket by reptiles as the house crickets (Acheta domestica) but some herps do enjoy them.

The Banded cricket (Gyllodes sigillatus) is the smallest of the three crickets listed above and the newest to the North-American market as they were only recently approved by the FDA.  They are very lively and high jumpers and can satisfy you pet's natural 'hunter' instincts.  They have a little more moisture, lower fat and ash, an slightly better Calcium/Phosphorous ratio than all other crickets, which makes them the better choice as a live cricket food stock.
